Costume & Hair Design

Originally going to college for Textile, Merchandising and Design Catia eventually changed majors but her love for fashion and telling a story through clothes never faded. This is how she honors both her love for fashion and storytelling. So far she is known for modernizing period costumes while respecting the silhouette of its allotted time period.

Red Velvet
By lolita chakrabarti

Concept: This play takes place in two time periods with the majority of it being a flashback it also takes place inside Ira's memory. That led to the idea of making the past England, 1833 grayscale. All the characters in the past range from black to white, the darker or lighter they dress the depicting where on the spectrum their morality stands. Ex. Ellen Tree is in a white base but she has darker jacket that she can take off or put on whenever she pleases. Most everyone lives in the grays some lighter than others besides Charles Kean, our Iago, who lives in all black. Then for "present day" Poland 1867, there are deeply saturated colors to juxtapose the grayscale of the past. In the finale, when all the ghosts or memories appear they each had a single red item on them that ties them to the present and of course given the title, Catia had to put Ira in Red Velvet.

Sense & Sensibility
by Kate Hamill

Concept: Kate Hamill's productions are known for being silly, bold, and farcical. Allowing for a more preposterous take on wardrobe. Since this play's plot is pushed along by a circle of gossips; Catia and the director Madison Cook-Hines went with a more Brechtian approach to costumes. In that each gossip had it's own colorful base but when playing a character would slap on some neutral items and become part of the world. Everyone existed in this pop sugar fantasy besides Elinor & Marianne who very much have to take the stakes and circumstances of the world seriously, so in turn are the only ones dressed traditionally and in darker hues.

Catia had fun honoring the truth of hoe black hair existed through the decades while working alongside longtime collaborator and friend, costume designer Jaimy Escobedo. For more on their process check out this interview. Click Here.
